The cylinder body sits fixed in the door leaf, held by a single screw in the faceplate. It never turns.
Inside the housing sits the plug with the keyway. It is the only part meant to turn — and that is exactly what the pins prevent.
Each pair has a key pin below and a driver pin above, plus a spring. At rest the upper pins reach into the plug and block it.
The right key lifts every pair to exactly the height where plug and housing pass each other. A tenth of a millimetre out and nothing turns.
Only when all five pairs are right does the plug turn the cam, and the cam moves the bolt. If it sticks here rather than in the cylinder, the door is at fault, not the lock.
